About three years ago I discovered that my dad’s grandparents were born in the Ozarks, quite possibly right here in the county I’ve been living in for the past 25 years. This was a surprise since I was born about 150 miles away in Southeast Kansas. I started having these visions of my great-grandmother in her later days thinking back on her life in the Ozarks, even tho she may have been living in Kansas durring her latter years. Further, we found out her maiden name was Martha Evaline Branson, the exact name of one of the daughters of Reuben Branson, for whom the town of Branson (where I live) was named, but twenty years earlier than Reuben’s daughter… with the possibility that my g-grandmother was an ancestor of those who founded Branson, Missouri. I announce this every night at my job at Presley’s Country Music Jubilee, and show those gathered for my pre-show, often over 100 souls, a photo of my great grandmother Eva. The song is in the mountain music or bluegrass ballad style, and features traditional bluegrass instrumentation of guitars, banjo, mandolin, upright bass, and fiddle (low-strung)… also the non-traditional cello. I wanted to add the dulcimer (which I do not play in this entire double album of 25 songs) and harmonica, but the texture was already thick enough… I taught this song to my friends “WestWind” (see photo page) and we played it at Michael Hearne’s Big Barndance Music Festival in Taos, New Mexico this past September (2011)…embarrassingly, I forgot the entire 2nd verse and so just played an instrumental…bummer. Regardless, I think the lyrics are some of my best and I believe this song will live on way past my own life… and I can’t say that I think that about much of my music. I like the imagery of the song, the use of key words like “sarsaparilla” and the short-cut phrase “washed away like Jesus”…sometimes you just use a phrase even if it is not correct grammatically, just because it works, and also serves to connect in this case with the rather fundamental religious traditions of this area. I also am happy with the inclusion of the apron image, since it was a big part of my memories as a child of my older women relatives, who always wore aprons much of the day. Would love some feedback on what you think of the lyrics and general production of this song, since it is the only truly bluegrass sound (except for my voice) of my 25 tunes on “Rosalias 1 & 2″…

Lyrics written with Cindy Carver. I would say that this song was the impetus for a year-long project, gathering music of the past 40 years, primarily guitar songs that for most part I had never recorded, and placing them into one album. The song is a bit of a through-composed piece, with a few threads of recurring snippets of words. “Fifth element”, “Fly and dream” and “bumblebee” are the key phrases and/or images. I would not recommend this type of lyric for beginning writers; however somehow this song seems to make sense and have a lot of energy. It mimics the sort of free-form thought that I borrowed from Cindy, in emails we were writing to each other in Nov of 2010. She is a fellow runner, we hit it off and started writing rather prolifically for a while, just sharing life, hopes, dreams. It was exhilirating to have the kind of energy exchange we were having, but short-lived… life takes all kinds of strange twists. The relationship has cooled, but the song lives on… and she has given permission to include the song in this collection. The structure of the song is somewhat fragmented, introducing new material until about 3/4 of the way through, with only repetitions of phrases to give it coherence. The imagery must be strong enough to carry through the theme of the song, for there is no resolution, no fulfillment, only a free-flowing toss up into the wind… like the relationship. Guitar is the main instrument, with support of piano, bass, drums, and the cello, which is the voice of coherence and yet flight. Great rock contribution by studio engineer Stephen (Stefen) John…Rod on 1st electric solo, 2nd by Stephen.
Full lyrics are included also on the website under “music”:

Fifth element, the quintessential thing
The most perfect embodiment of something
Pure and concentrated essence, the quintessential thing
Fifth element

Fire, earth, air, and water, we’re above these heavenly bodies
We’re not these things but still we are the quintessential thing

So it’s “no” to Don of “Mad Men”
and “no” to lover’s trysts
but giving free, and surprisingly
it’s just no more than this!
(just no more than this)

To walk outside your door one day and stand there in the sun
On a cool November morning, and feel the comfort of this one;
There’s (no) danger in the moment, but for once
let’s step outside
to an eternal bond of kinship,
and let’s go just for the ride! (for the ride)

Finding flight in flightless bodies
with forgotten wings of light
in my nonsense or no-nonsense
but standing out of sight
I come in like the rain and push you forward, push you harder
on the no-hurt path, but sadness at what’s been left behind
open up our hearts to love and dream, you’re like the bumblebee-
set to fly and dream, and fly and dream,
and dream and fly and dream
(set to fly and dream)

These hearts have taken flight
and now we’re walking in God’s light
if anyone should listen here, they too would hear Him call
and find that same Fifth Element inside their hearts
that beat within and yet inspire song
and set the bumblebee to fly
to some far distant home,
Fly and dream, fly and dream,
set to fly and dream”

–”Fifth Element”, Rod Phillips, lyrics by RP and CC

This day Brian dropped by and we picked up the “banjovi” (a real miniature banjo) and one of my vintage instruments, a toy piano, and played an actual song just for fun!

About five years ago I was in the throes of my first mid-winter depression. I had decided to let myself go and see where it took me. That was an experiment and I will not do it that way again: I am fighting anything that resembles that at first sight, because I am a firm believer in the power of the mind and the enabling of the Creator to help me with that, upon just asking. Anyway, my friend Dale Tower had passed a poem to me some days earlier that was written by his brother in law from New Zealand, Bob Rommage. I hadn’t written a song in ten years but that dreary day I sat at the piano and later with the guitar and wrote a nice little melody to the words, which were based on a description of Dale returning to his humble little town in Kansas after spending time in New York City for a job related symposium….the profound quiet and simplicity of Rosalia was a comfort, a respite in his life and I tried to capture that in the simple little melody… little did I know that in addition to helping lift me out of that first bout of depression five years ago (I had been there about two months), it also was the springboard for a new album project that finally came to fruition just a week ago… of course there were a few other people involved in getting me motivated (not the least of whom is the faithfulness of my wife Andrea) and I will speak of them in future blogs.
“From my front porch, a peaceful scene
The Flint Hills casting history
Where sculpting hands of time have been,
No flashing bast * * * screen…”
-original lyrics from Bob Rommage, “Rosalia” (the poem)

Rod Phillips plays 12 instruments on the album, one for every day of the 12 days of Christmas! Harp is the featured instrument, along with flutes and whistles, and cello. This is my Dad (Ron Phillips, b. 1922)’s favorite CD– he plays it year-round, as it is holiday music but not commercial. Delightful sounds of the little Lorien harp in traditional and light jazz settings.

This first post is a description of Rod’s new CD, available on CDbaby and others within the next 48 hours: “Rosalia One: Going Out” is the first half of a two part album of 25
songs written, played, and sung by Rod Phillips, in a style reminiscent
of Dan Fogelberg, John Denver, and/or Michael Martin Murphey. The
songs were written over a fort…y year period, some going back a full 40
years and some written within a year of the recording, reflecting an
… evolution and growth in the artist’s writing style, and incorporating
over a dozen instruments played by the artist– placing this
accomplishment in the category of a Stevie Wonder or Todd Rungren–
both multi-instrumentalists. Expert drummer/percussionist Pete

Generous (Springfield, MO) and seasoned fiddle player George Geisser

(Branson, MO) on the low-strung 5 string fiddle are the only other

musicians on the album (OK, theres a cameo electric guitar solo on “5th

Element” by superb engineer/technician Stephen “Jimi” John). So, Rod

plays 3 kinds of guitars, bass, piano, cello, keyboards, chromatic and

blues harmonicas, Indian flute, whistle, and classical flute, mandolin,

banjo, celtic harp, & alto saxophone, and sings all the parts a la

Crosby, Stills, and Nash (it’s widely known that parts of their songs

were doubled by the lead vocalist on the track). That’s around fifteen

instruments, but who’s counting? The important part of the music is

the lyrics, tone, and delivery of the songs. They are art songs, songs

of family, reminiscence, longing, life, and love, with impeccable

lyrics and sometimes great stories. To put a singer in a category is

dangerous but Rod is not a rapper, not a blues singer, not a country

singer per se… if you’re looking for a wailer, you won’t find it

here. There’s much emphasis on the clarity of the lyrics and a

dependence on the form of the song, its poetry, for its impact. Rod

collaborates with a few other lyricists on the album, whom,he says “were a great

source of the inspiration for recording it, namely my friends Dale

Tower, Bob Rommage, and Cindy Carver, and a fine contribution

lyrically by Bill Smith (in Omaha, NB, anybody know how to contact him?) for ‘She Reminds Me of Montana’. Thanks especially to my ‘old’ friend Dale and my ‘new’ friend Cindy… I would never have recorded this album without their inspiration and support.”
